House rules

Our manners.

Polite software is software that's considerate of the people using it. We think the same should go for your whole store, and for the people who build it.

To your shoppers
01Don't make people hunt for what they came for.
02Don't interrupt without a good reason.
03Be fast. Waiting is rude.
04When something goes wrong, say what and how to fix it.
To you
05Plain English, always.
06We tell you when a test loses.
07We'll say when something isn't worth building.
08You should never need us to keep the lights on.
To your code
09Replace one app, remove one app.
10If we made it slower, we'll tell you why.
11Don't break the next theme update.
12Leave notes for whoever comes next.

Things we politely decline.

Not because they don't matter. Because someone else should own them, or nobody should be doing them at all.

Writing your weekly campaign emailsNo, thank you
Adding an app for every problemNo, thank you
Locking you into needing usNo, thank you

Where the name comes from

Why polite?

The name comes from polite software design: the idea that software should pay attention to the person using it, anticipate what they need, skip the pointless questions and take responsibility when things go wrong.

[Decision: name Alan Cooper and About Face here, or keep it as the idea without the reference.]

How are your store's manners?

The audit will tell you, kindly and honestly.
